Hi Nancy,
Thank you. As my husband and I short-hand it, we sometimes need: "New stuff! New stuff!" -- which for us means a change up of some kind.

Hi Davina,
Yes, that first tilling of the soil in the spring gets me fired up and energized, too. Way to go with the change up of meals and noticing the difference.

I have a dirty mind and I'm proud of it :-) Like to get my fingers dirty weeding that garden. Could talk about farm life forever. I did have breakfast for dinner last night; oatmeal. It was surprisingly good; not rushed like the usual bowl of oatmeal in the morning.

Such a great post with wonderful insights! And there is another way to recognize the value of rut-busting. As I teach in my “Rut-Busting”™ workshops, when you introduce something new into your life—take on a new challenge or let go of old habits—you are refreshing the "soil" from which creativity can grow. A garden will not produce as well if the farmer keeps planting the same crops in the same place. Instead, he must rotate them, to allow the soil to gain some fresh nutrients. The same is true of us. Change freshens, nourishes and strengthens us.

Hi Betsy--
So true! -- "Getting older teaches me that the only part of the equation I can alter is my own."
May this year bring great harvests to us all!

Hi Lance--
Hey, my husband is from Wisconsin where he spent time on a dairy farm as a kid.

Responding vs. reacting is far more powerful than I can explain in a post, but you captured a big part of it in your alternate route story. Thank you for that addition!

Lori,
Well...this post transported me right back to my days growing up in rural Wisconsin! I remember many days spent out in the fields and taking care of the cattle.

The section about responding instead of reacting really caught my attention. Just last week, on my way to work - I was behind a slow driver and unable to pass. In the grand scheme of things, this wasn't much of a traffic jam, and it wasn't really slowing me down that much. Still, I decided to turn off onto an alternate route - off the main road. And as I did, I just kept thinking to myself how this really was a great choice. There were no cars, I was driving out in the country amongst farms, forests, and fields - and I was suddenly extra calm. And then, as I thought about it - I knew this new route would take me longer - and still there was this extra calm. I'm thinking now that I should take this way more often. In this case, I responded by finding a new route - and it gave me a new outlook on life that day.
