This week marks the four year anniversary of Life’s Little Inspirations. On Leap Day, 2008, I saw a link for a WordPress.com website and thought, “Hey, maybe I’ll be a blogger!” I pressed a button and an entire new world opened up for me.
I would like to take a moment out of this post to thank all of you who have been with me from the beginning, and to welcome all of you who have been joining us throughout the journey. You are all a huge part of this success.
A success that I had never even dreamed of when I pushed that button to start.
I never would have believed that four years later, I would be the co-owner of a business with three distinct divisions, an e-zine, a published book (and another on the way) and four websites to manage.
Frankly, I am glad I didn’t know. If I had, I can guess that I would have been bogged down by my big hairy vision, drowning in what-ifs and the minuta of details and would have labored away at making it perfect before I even began. I would have been overwhelmed by my lack of knowledge, lack of support by experts, and an overall lack of a plan. I wouldn’t have had a clue how to get from there to here. And I would have been stuck before I even started.
Luckily for me, my long range vision was a little short-sighted and cloudy.
All I knew was that I wanted to be a writer, and in order to do that, I needed to write, and in order to do that—I needed a place to do it where I had the potential to be heard.
I was clear on what my immediate need was and where I wanted it to take me. I wanted to be a writer whose words were read.
My long term goal was also very simple. I wanted to be a published writer.
Because my short term goal was clear, and my long term goal as well, I had all I needed to take immediate action and nothing more.
Have you ever had a situation where you were crystal clear on what you wanted and was able to leap into instant action?
Here is an important thing.
I had no idea how I was going to end up a published writer in the future. Only that this was the intention. I started, with absolutely no idea how to get from there to here.
I didn’t focus on the HOW. I only focused on the DO.
What did I have to DO to become a writer? Simple. I had to write.
I didn’t have to write well. Not back then. That came later, with practice. I didn’t have to learn the ins and outs of social media. That came later. I didn’t have to go find one thousand admiring fans, because frankly there was nothing for them to admire.
That came later—after I had starting writing. Regularly and with persistence and discipline.
What about you?
Have you ever found yourself stuck because you are looking so far down the road and envisioning your name in lights, or on a book, or as the head of a huge company that you can’t even take the first step? Do you dream instead of DO?
We all have. Especially those of us who are creative, visionary, and entrepreneurs.
We let the clutter of our dreams and big plans keep us from streamlining the action steps that would actually start the journey.
Here are a few questions to get you started.
What is your shortest-what you need to get done right now– goal?
What is the very first tiny step you can take to get it done?
Is it repeatable?
Is it sustainable?
Will it create a habit of success for you?
Go do it.
Leap and let the clutter of the questions that come with,”What happens when I hit the big time” rest for now. Put them aside and focus on where you are right now, this moment in time.
The Future will be here quickly and will be measured by the tiny steps and choices you are making right this minute. The little ones are more power-packed than you can even imagine.
Pick one. And LEAP.
