Guard your speech. Never speak of yourself, your affairs, or of anything else in a discouraged or discouraging way. Never admit the possibility of failure, or speak in a way that infers failure as a possibility.
~ Wallace D. Wattles
How’s your attitude lately? Grumbly, happy, forlorn, excited, anticipatory, disillusioned, cynical, martyred, crabby, sarcastic, positive, grateful, loving, curious or something else?
Our attitudes can be like the weather, shifting daily, blowing around like a soft breeze—or a nasty storm.
Sadly, most of us check the weather updates more than we check the updates on our own attitudes. For years, I couldn’t quite put my finger on what attitude was….let alone what kind of an attitude I had. Do you have this problem?
Maybe this will help. Think of yourself as a story. Or a character in a book. If you paid attention to your thoughts and words for a few days, what would you say was the over-reaching theme of your thoughts and comments? Look up above at our list. Anything one of those attitude themes stand out for you? Something else come to mind?
Now, if you were (and actually you are) the writer of your personal attitude, is the one you found the one you want to keep? Or is it time for a new attitude? Would you write a new story about yourself?
Attitudes are as easy to change as changing your thoughts. However, thoughts can be tricky things. They can be pesky little buggers creeping back in when you aren’t paying attention. They can well up until you suddenly want to explode. And the sad part is, you might not even know why.
If you can’t get a handle on your thoughts, then getting a new attitude becomes difficult. You might have to dig a little deeper. I’ve been working on Steps to a new attitude. This is a work in progress and I would love to have your help on this. What do you do when you need to change your attitude?
Here is my list so far…
Ten Steps to talking yourself into a new attitude.
- Step One: Identify Your current attitude.
- Step Two: Is it the one you want? If not, how is it making you feel?
- Step Three: Pick a new attitude. How would that one make you feel?
- Step Four: Identify the block that is making it hard to shift to the new attitude
- Step Five: Take time for quiet reflection- emotional outburst-and/or journaling
- Step Six: Look for your hidden rules. Is there a “Rule” you are living by that isn’t working for you anymore?
- Step Seven: Is it in your power to change the situation? If so, create your first action step to fix the problem
- Step Eight: If there is nothing you can do, can you let it go?
- Step Nine: Write out three affirmations of your new attitude.
- Step Ten: Take one new action step that propels you in the direction of your new attitude.
Let me know what your steps would be. I would love to discuss!
