What is the number one reason you don’t accomplish your goals?
I know for me it comes down to one thing. One Excuse that gets disguised into many different versions, but it doesn’t really make much of a difference. For me, it’s always the same song and dance.
Magical Time.
I’ll get to it tomorrow. I’ll do it during that magical, mythical part of tomorrow that didn’t happen today. The part where I have plenty of free time stretched out before me like a sunny, sandy beach. In the smart part of my brain, I know this magical stretch of time is nothing more than a fantasy.
I know better.
But that doesn’t stop me from being pulled into the excuse. No matter what, some part of my head is determined to believe that tomorrow will be a better day to get things done.
So how do I get past it?
I have an accountability partner. It’s one thing to tell myself that it’s okay to wait until tomorrow, but getting Wynn to buy into my garbage would be a much tougher sell.
I have a coach. Checking in with a coach on a regular basis keeps the fantasy away. It helps me to stay on task and keep the WHY of my goal firmly in place and not put off to Someday.
I have a Business Partner. And I hate to let her down. Period.
I have a journal. Writing—re-reading—my journal reminds me of all the other times the fantasy has engaged. All the other times that I sold myself a bill of goods about elusive free time that never is coming.
Right now, I am engaged in a bit of fantasy about having a long stretch of free time that I will be able to catch up on all the things that haven’t been getting done.It would be easy to let things pile up until the magical free time shows up.
But I’ve checked that fantasy at the door. Instead, I’m carving out an hour a day to catch up and get prepared for the holidays. An hour is reality I can handle. An hour is a truth that gets stuff done.
Today…not Someday.
